South London artist Sampha was announced as the winner for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize. Receiving the award for his debut LP titled Process.

Beating out other nominees such as The xx, Stormzy and pop sensation Ed Sheeran among others, Sampha dedicated the award to his parents: “My mum would be very proud, my dad would probably be embarrassingly proud.”

The artist has worked with Kanye West, Beyonce and Drake in the past, and his transition to producing an original record has been equally successful.

The award was presented by Idris Elba, alongside a purse of £25,000. Sampha also performed the album track (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, and added the following:

“It feels amazing. It has taken me a while to feel like I’m emotionally stable enough to write my own record and everyone was so lovely to give me the time to create it. I put my heart and soul into the record and I’m very proud of it. It’s a very internal record and I think that comes across. It’s great to be recognized for that.”
