Our first 40 Questions of 2019 finds London DJ, producer and label boss Third Son take on a new and updated set of questions following his impressive Voices EP that came out on his Polymath imprint toward the end of last year. The interview finds him mention Harry Potter, Danny DeVito and USB sticks containing Rick Astley. Find it in full below.

1. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

In Istanbul airport lounge doing this interview, of course (apologies).

2. What year were you born?

1990.

3. Do you have a nickname?

The Third Son.

4. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

A full size keg full of delicious Pale Ale.

5. How would you describe yourself?

Corpuscular.

6. Worst experience as a DJ?

Playing to 10 people at a student gig in Exeter. Luckily this was a long time ago.

7. Best experience as a DJ?

Playing to 6000 people in Australia very recently. Was a real Bush Doof.

8. Favourite record label?

At the moment, Omnidisc.

9. What’s your biggest weakness?

Peanut Butter based confectionary.

10. First record you ever paid for?

An Exploited record I think, couldn’t even tell you the artist.

11. What’s your morning routine?

Coffee. Lots of Coffee.

12. Your dream collaboration?

Amon Tobin.

13. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I quit the gym recently and it was the best thing I ever did.

14. Who’s your biggest inspiration?

Rowan Atkinson.

15. Ever smoked?

I have, and still do sometimes.

16. Ever done drugs?

Yep.

17. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A new laptop from my brother, when I was a poor student and could only afford pasta.

18. And the best gift you’ve ever given?

I’m a rubbish gift giver really. My housemate recently asked for my label discography, I gave him a USB with a video of Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up. Ashamed of myself.

19. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?

Hanoi is a very cool place. Passed through there recently as part of a tour and loved it.

20. And one place you want to visit?

Reykjavik.

21. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Radiohead.

22. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Probably a PhD/research. I did a masters in chemistry before deciding to do music full time.

23. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Working the bar.

24. Favourite record right now?

Ryan James Ford – Hobrv Kegdit.

25. And the best record ever made?

Probably something by Toto.

26. One thing you couldn’t live without?

Coffee. Lots of Coffee.

27. Your favourite food?

Japanese, or Thai. Asian food in general is another level.

28. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Crocodile sushi.

29. Who would you want to play you in a movie?

Danny DeVito.

30. What’s something you’re passionate about?

Curb Your Enthusiasm.

31. Favourite club you’ve played at?

Indore in India. It’s always the gigs you least expect to be good that blow your mind the most.

32. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Strawberry Fields in Australia.

33. Craziest story of being on the road?

I nearly missed a flight once. Mental aye.

34. Weirdest request as a DJ?

Something by Drake.

35. If you had one super power what would it be?

Perfect pitch.

36. Late sleeper or early riser?

Early bird.

37. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

You’re a fucking Wizard Harry. Classic.

38. The top thing on your bucket list?

Write something really good.

39. Most memorable moment of your life so far?

I honestly can’t remember.

40. Will you ever be done with music?

No way.
