40 Questions: Stephan Hinz

stephan hinz, soundspace, interview, 40 questions

Records on elite techno outputs such as Beyer’s Drumcode, or Cox’s Intec have placed Stephan Hinz in a unique position. He’s got a seat at the table. The German artist recently returned to his frequent stable Second State Audio (headed by Pan-Pot), and is soon to join Nicole Moudaber’s Mood Music imprint.

Hinz not only delivers top shelf productions, but he does it consistently. In a way that’s caught the attention of a lot of people. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for 2017.

1. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

On the plane, flying back from Milano. It was my first time playing in Italy and it was an unbelievable night. Such a warm welcome and a breathtaking crowd.

2. What year were you born?

1979.

3. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

My little DeLorean from Back To The Future III :D

4. Worst experience as a DJ?

When I played in Portugal for the first time (10 years back) there was one guy hitting some other guy right in the face who collapsed immediately…that was a really shitty thing and I was shocked.

5. Best experience as a DJ Live Act?

Last night at Amnesia was pretty close. I just started my intro and everyone’s arms went up, there was cheering, applause. They were with me from the first second onwards. That was really a crazy night.

6. Favourite record label?

There are too many to pick from but one of the most consistent and inspiring ones is Erased Tapes.

7. House or Techno?

Techno, but my music always has some house influence.

8. First record you ever paid for?

I think that must be DJ Misjah & DJ Tim – Access (X-Trax)

Both. I love being in the studio writing new music and I also love being on the road playing that music.

Radiohead x Stephan Hinz, reaching for the stars here.

Too much, but I quit around 12 years ago.

14. Ever done drugs?

Nope, just alcohol.

15. Ever stole?

Yes, I once stole a little bottle of alcohol in a supermarket. I didn’t want to drink it but my best friend back then did, he was too gutless and talked me into it. Of course, we got busted and my dad had to come and take me home… man, that was so embarrassing and not just for me as you can imagine. Never did it again.

16. Busy city, or quiet beach?

Both. I love the vitality of a city and especially in Berlin, the freedom you have here as a person. You can be whoever you want to be in Berlin. I also like quiet beaches, there’s no better place to recharge your batteries.

There are a lot of artists who inspire me, but the ones who are there for the whole time are Radiohead and Thomas Newman.

Nathan Fake just uploaded new tracks to his Soundcloud – actually it’s almost an album now. And I’m also listening to Olafur Arnalds’ ’Island Songs’ album a lot at the moment.

21. Favourite record of all time?

Radiohead – Everything In Its Right Place.

22. One thing you couldn’t live without?

My piano.

23. Favourite food?

Raclette. The coolest thing on earth is to gratinate things with cheese. But even cooler is to gratinate cheese with cheese. My favorite is suisse raclette cheese with Gruyère, Camembert and Cheddar. Could die for it.

24. Movies or books?

Both. I read a lot but I also watch a lot of movies. Even though movies have lost a bit of their magic today. There’s more and more special effects and less and less good storytelling.

25. Vinyl or CDJs?

Old school. Vinyl. My parents had a great vinyl collection and I grew up with it.

26. Favourite country to travel to?

I love Italy. The food, the people, and my sister is living there; that’s an unbeatable advantage that Italy has over any other country.

27. Favourite club you’ve played at?

I’ve played in a lot of good clubs but playing at Watergate in Berlin is always special for me.

28. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

I loved playing the carpark at Tobacco Dock for the London Electronic Arts Festival (LEAF). It was my first time playing in the UK and the vibe there just blew my mind. I’m very much looking forward to playing Awakenings on New Years Eve too, I’m sure that will be one for the books.

29. Craziest story of being on the road?

Many years back I played at Kazantip Festival Ukraine with my buddy Martin Eyerer. They gave us a room that actually was a joke. Just one 80x200cm mattress, no real door. So we asked for another room and they said no problem, but you have to wait for it because of bla bla bla. So we were waiting all day, and every 3 hours or something we asked them again about the room and they said no problem, it will be ready in a few minutes. In the evening, after waiting for ages, a couple came to the place and after a while our room was ready. Afterwards, it turned out that they threw them out of the room to gave it to us, that was really odd and the couple went off and we couldn’t do anything about it.

30. Weirdest request as a DJ?

I was playing a strong techno set in a club and there was an old guy, somewhere in his seventies and he was dancing the whole time. At some point he came to me and asked: ’Any chance you can play an Elvis track?’ I said ’Sorry, I don’t have Elvis’. He turned around saying ’You young guys know nothing about good music. Always just boom boom boom…’

31. Coke or Pepsi?

Coca Cola.

32. If you had one super power what would it be?

I thought about that question a lot and I think I’d go for the super power that enables me and others to find out, on our own, what matters most in life. I have the hope that it’s not just all about having a new Porsche and a bigger TV for most of us. Change starts in ourselves.

33. Late sleeper or early riser?

Definitely late sleeper. Would like to be an early bird and to be honest I try it at least once a year to establish early rising, but I simply like to sleep long and even if I hit the sheets around 11pm I sleep till 9 in the morning.

34. Favourite fruit?

Raspberries.

35. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

Anklepants Boiler Room.

36. Shower or bath?

Bath. Especially in the winter time my bath additives collection is huge.

37. The top thing on your bucket list?

Having kids.

38. PlayStation or Xbox?

PlayStation but actually I’m not really a gamer. I like to play PES with my friends, but I never really liked gaming alone.

39. Do you have any pets?

Nope.

40. Anything to add?

Thank you Martin, Alexi, Robin, Tassilo and Thomas! Without you guys I probably would have never reached a point where I can do every day what I like most: writing music.
