40 Questions: Juliet Fox

Juliet Fox’s journey from Australia to Germany has been a hard road, paved with long studio sessions and countless hours behind the decks.

The now Berlin-based artist has played every stage from Burning Man in Nevada to Watergate in Berlin and has released on labels like Drumcode, Filth On Acid, Noir Music, Octopus and more.

Fox takes on our 40 Questions for the latest edition of the series where she mentions everything from her time at Burning Man, her dream collaborations in the studio and who she might want to play her in a movie.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

In Berlin doing this interview, currently sitting on my friend’s balcony catching the last bit of sun.

02. What year were you born?

1982 (shhhhh).

03. Do you have a nickname?

Jules, Foxy, Cheese Face.

04. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

This vintage Kenwood Turntable and monitor system, which has Pioneer speakers connected to it, and it still totally booms.

05. How would you describe yourself?

Like a fine wine, that keeps getting better with age.

06. Worst experience as a DJ?

There have been a few crazy moments for sure, some experiences where no driver has come to collect you from the airport, or they have and definitely should not be driving. Or they just sleep in or keep partying and don’t show up to take you to the airport, small things like this, but in random and remote places in foreign countries it can be a bit daunting.

07. Best experience as a DJ?

Being able to play your own music to people, and doing something you love so much. It’s really an amazing feeling.

08. Favourite record label?

Drumcode Records.

09. What’s your biggest weakness?

There is a few for sure, but I usually have good will power. I will just say ice cream okay lol.

10. First record you ever paid for?

Kosheen – Hide U.

11. What’s your morning routine?

On a usual day at home it would be coffee, followed by some yoga or a run, then I would make some breakfast and sit at my computer to check up on emails and go over my to do list. Then usually I would be in my studio at least two days in a week.

12. Your dream collaboration?

I have already had some really special collaborations such as Green Velvet, Ramiro Lopez, Coyu, Spektre to name a few. But if I could it would be with Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, or Pan-Pot.

13. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

I’m a great cook, I try not to let onto this too much though, otherwise people will be lining up at the door.

14. Who’s your biggest inspiration?

I don’t really have one alone. there was a lot of different influences for me. Like Donna Summer, Kevin Saunderson, Sven Vath, and outside of the electronic dance scene I love Placebo.

15. Ever smoked?

Once or twice.

17. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

I guess I could say my first car that my dad bought me when I was 16. A bright orange retro (as in old) Fiat.

18. And the best gift you’ve ever given?

I once flew back to Australia (where I was born), to surprise my mum as she wasn’t well at the time, and got my sister to pick me at the airport without her knowing. So I guess myself haha.

19. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?

This is hard! I have been to so many incredible places to DJ especially. Burning Man would have to be the top though, and Afikaburbn. Then places like Fiji, Finland where I played inside a giant waterpark while it was snowing outside, and anywhere in South America really.

20. And one place you want to visit?

The Caribbean Islands.

21. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Jeff Mills.

22. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Most likely in the health and fitness industry, or I would have my own winery.

23. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Working as an Executive Assistant for an insurance broker, which I found super boring.

24. Favourite record right now?

25. And the best record ever made?

This is definitely a hard one to choose as there are sooo many great tracks! But I recently heard Eric Prydz – Call On Me and I hadn’t in years, so I will say this one!

26. One thing you couldn’t live without?

My mum and dad.

27. Your favourite food?

I love all Asian food actually, Thai and Japanese especially, anything spicy.

28. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

I had a gig in China one time, and I wasn’t allowed to know what I was eating until I had tried it, and yeah I ate a bull dick, nom nom.

29. Who would you want to play you in a movie?

Angelina Jolie.

30. What’s something you’re passionate about?

Music, love and living life to the fullest.

31. Favourite club you’ve played at?

I love Sisyphos in Berlin. I had so many great experiences playing in the Hammahalle, then also a fairly new club in Melbourne called Xe54, really amazing!

32. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

EDC Vegas, and soon to be playing at the one in Orlando in November.

33. Craziest story of being on the road?

Too many to say haha, but one was having to drive a huge RV from LA to Burning Man, as the original drivers weren’t in a state to, so a very spontaneous thing to have to do and take responsibility for.

34. Weirdest request as a DJ?

Nothing that extreme actually. I have been asked to sign photos of myself before that the person had had printed out or to write in a book for them. But I think it’s kind of sweet.

35. If you had one superpower what would it be?

To be able to fly fast, and so I could hover high in the sky away from the rest of the world and just gaze back down.

36. Late sleeper or early riser?

Both actually. I can easily stay up all night. But in the last year or so I have really tried to keep a good routine in the weekdays no matter how my weekend went. So I like to be up by around 8:30am most days.

37. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

It would have to be this Korean girl’s Youtube channel, her name is Showry, and the stuff she does is just a little bit wow lol!

38. The top thing on your bucket list?

I want to really explore the Amazon, and learn more about the tribes and culture there, there is so much healing power there we probably have no idea about.

39. Most memorable moment of your life so far?

After moving to Berlin actually, as from then I learnt so much about myself, music, and connected with so many amazing people.

40. Will you ever be done with music?

Never! The power of music is limitless, and I can’t wait to keep exploring it every day.
