Coyu and his Suara imprint are infamous among international techno, the label has brought us the sounds of producers like Charlotte De Witte, Green Velvet, Pig&Dan and UMEK, and has pushed Spanish techno to heights it has never seen before.

Ahead of his anticipated debut artist album, we welcome the Suara bossman to our 40 Questions series where he mentions his obsession with cats, being inspired by Moby and getting punched in the face by a club promoter.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

I’m at home, I just came back from the gym this morning and now I’m about to start cooking something for lunch.

02. What year were you born?


03. Do you have a nickname?

The Big Cat.

04. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

My cats are 100%.

05. How would you describe yourself?

Difficult to say in a few words but I guess loyalty is one of my best qualities and one value I cherish the most.

06. Worst experience as a DJ?

The owner of a club punched me in the face for playing a certain track.

07. Best experience as a DJ?

The Main Stage of Sónar Festival in 2012. An amazing experience and huge crowd.

08. Favourite record label?

I don’t have a favourite record label, there are just too many good ones to pick out just one.

09. What’s your biggest weakness?

Sometimes I can be too impatient.

10. First record you ever paid for?

Justus Köhncke – Was Ist Musik (Remixes), Kompakt & Analog Fingerprints – Roofs.

11. What’s your morning routine?

Wake up, breakfast, label work and then gym.

12. Your dream collaboration?

Moby, and we just made a track together for my first album!

13. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

You can know anything you want about me.

14. Who’s your biggest inspiration?

My cats.

15. Ever smoked?

I smoked one cigarette when I was 18 and I hated it. Since then I’ve never tried again.

16. Ever done drugs?

Yes, mainly alcohol but I’ve tried other stuff.

17. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A football when I was 5, and still a huge fan to this day.

18. And the best gift you’ve ever given?

My DJ sets are the best gift I can give to someone I guess.

19. What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been to?

Angkor Wat in Cambodia, super cool place.

20. And one place you want to visit?

Many. Jordania, New Zealand, Hawaii.

21. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

Laurent Garnier.

22. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

I wanted to be a sports journalist before becoming a DJ.

23. Worst job you’ve ever had?

I have only worked 6 months outside of the music industry and it wasn’t that bad: unloading trucks at a cargo airport.

24. Favourite record right now?

Marco Shuttle – The Vox Attitude (Marco Shuttle To The Bone Remix).

25. And the best record ever made?

Radiohead – Idioteque, Moby – Porcelain and Bloc Party – Tulips (Minotaur Shock Remix).

26. One thing you couldn’t live without?

Split choice between music and cats.

27. Your favourite food?

Most vegan food.

28. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Before becoming vegan I didn’t like to eat strange things. Seafood?

29. Who would you want to play you in a movie?

Joaquin Phoenix or Jared Leto.

30. What’s something you’re passionate about?

Guess it’s quite obvious to most people but I would have say cats.

31. Favourite club you’ve played at?

Space Ibiza.

32. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Sónar Festival.

33. Craziest story of being on the road?

Mexican police stopped the car that was taking me from San Luis to Mexico DF, to ask me for money of course.

34. Weirdest request as a DJ?

A couple of weeks ago someone came to the booth to ask me to play Drake. It was in Berlin also which I thought was strange.

35. If you had one superpower what would it be?


36. Late sleeper or early riser?

I go to sleep around midnight and wake up around 9am.

37. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

I don’t use YouTube to watch strange stuff.

38. The top thing on your bucket list?

I have no bucket list, many things I want to do, but far too many to make a list.

39. Most memorable moment of your life so far?

I’m too young for memorable things. Let’s see what the future holds.

40. Will you ever be done with music?

Never. Music is my life.
