German double act Milk & Sugar have had a long and fruitful career as a house duo. They have seen mainstream chart success on multiple occasions with their original work, and have remixed pop icons like Janet Jackson, Usher and Jamiroquai and dropped countless compilation albums via their own label; Milk & Sugar Recordings.

01. Where are you right now and what are you doing?

In our studio and label office putting the final touches on our upcoming compilation Beach Sessions and our album 20 years of Milk & Sugar.

02. What year were you born?

The idea of founding a house act and calling it Milk & Sugar was born in 1997, so we are going to celebrate our 20th anniversary this year.

03. What’s the coolest thing in your house?

There is a Roland Jupiter 8 synth from 1982 in the studio which we use frequently. Unfortunately many faders and buttons stopped operating, but it is almost impossible to get any original parts to fix it.

04. Worst experience as a DJ?

Being called on stage to play just before a heavy thunderstorm hit that festival, somewhere in the north of Hungary. Everybody tried to hide under the stage, but there was the electric installations and as the water kept flooding everybody was afraid of an electric shock.

05. Best experience as a DJ?

Fortunately there are many. Flying over to Brazil and 40,000 people singing our latest song when we dropped it was definitely one of the best.

06. Favourite record label?

At this very moment Mother Recordings.

07. House or Techno?

House.

08. First record you ever paid for?

Bruce Hornsby & The Range – The Way It Is, David Bowie – Let´s Dance.

09. Studio or DJ booth?

Definitely booth.

10. Your dream collaboration?

Larry Levan, R.I.P.

11. Tell us something we shouldn’t know about you?

Before moving to house we started a techno project.

12. Cats or dogs?

If any we prefer hot dogs.

13. Ever smoked?

Both for years, but we´re now trying to stay healthy.

14. Ever done drugs?

We survived the 90s, that´s all what counts.

15. Ever stole?

Our first couple of records were based on illegal samples. As we became older we started to release only legal songs.

16. Busy city, or quiet beach?

We prefer a good music festival, that´s where we get inspiration.

17. One act who’s inspired you your whole career?

The Salsoul Orchestra.

18. If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you be doing?

Probably something artistic, maybe graphics or films.

19. Worst job you’ve ever had?

Working in a bank.

20. Favourite record right now?

21. Favourite record of all time?

David Bowie – I AM A DJ.

22. One thing you couldn’t live without?

Internet.

23. Favourite food?

Sushi.

24. Movies or books?

Depends if we are on tour or at home. Books while touring and movies at home.

25. Vinyl or CDJs?

We´ve always played vinyl, but over the years it was not possible to get the latest stuff on vinyl anymore. So we started to play CDs and MP3s.

26. Favourite country to travel to?

Brazil is amazing.

27. Favourite club you’ve played at?

Green Valley in Brazil.

28. Favourite festival you’ve played at?

Time Warp.

29. Craziest story of being on the road?

There are enough for a book or two. We´ve been hired to play for a birthday party of some Kazakhstan oil baron in Monaco a couple of years ago. It turned out to be the private dinner with him and his wife and we played only for those two.

30. Weirdest request as a DJ?

A guy came to the booth and asked “Can I leave my clothes here”. We were like, Yes, and then he took everything off, except his boots. EVERYTHING!

31. Coke or Pepsi?

Coke Zero.

32. If you had one super power what would it be?

Stay awake without sleeping.

33. Late sleeper or early riser?

Late sleeper.

34. Favourite fruit?

Strawberry. In a glass with ice and Japanese Sake.

35. Strangest video you’ve watched on YouTube?

It was today on the news: A dog rescued a little fawn out of a flooded river. Crazy.

36. Shower or bath?

Bath.

37. The top thing on your bucket list?

Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

38. PlayStation or Xbox?

None of it above. The best way to spend time in front of a computer screen is making music with Logic Pro or Ableton.

39. Do you have any pets?

Yes, in the roof of Michael´s house. A couple dormouse’s. Need to get rid of them before they should decide to breed.
